Ever since becoming a Christian, I have heard people state “what’s tithing got to do with it’. What was very interesting to me is that this debate was within they church. I heard every excuse there is about Tithing. Early in my Christian walk I also gave excuses. The main excuses I heard dealt with the Old vs New Testament practices or do I tithe based on the gross or net? After spending time in God’s word over the years I came to the following conclusion.

Ultimately It depends on whether you have faith enough to trust and obey God”s word. Christians learn that the Bible is the final authority in all situations including our finances.. The bible has over 2300 verses that deal with money or finances. Therefore God has plenty to say. You may be asking yourself what is God’s view?

The Bible is the final authority

II Tim 3:16-17– All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,  so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

The following scriptures helped me to answer the question What does Tithing Got To Do With It?

Malachi 3:10

God’s Way

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.

I learned over the years that if the Bible is the final authority, then I must do it Gods way. The Tithe is an external sign of an internal commitment. Where you are with God will determine what you give back to him at least the minimum of 10% to finance the kingdom of God. Essentially giving to God is an expression of our devotion to God. God gives us things to share and not just hold on to those things.True giving requires our head and our heart

2 Cor. 9:6-8

Cheerful Attitudes

The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.

ultimately, to do it Gods way you must give cheerfully with the right attitude and if done consistently and faithfully God will reward the giver.

Hebrews 11:6

Faith

And without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would approach him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Faith means to believe and obey, therefore when a person confesses Jesus as Lord, they are confessing that Jesus is their own ruling Lord in whom they trust. In my early Christian walk I confessed Jesus for the blessings of salvation but failed to accept him as Lord and obey his commandments. As I began reading God’s word more and more I accepted his as Lord of my life.

Many people will say that the commandment to tithe in Malachi is in the old testament but what that have to do with obeying Jesus in the New Testament. John 1:1 says In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Furthermore John 1:14 goes on to say And the Word became flesh and lived among us.

As a matter of fact, the same Jesus we confessed in the New Testament is the same Jesus is the same God who commanded us to tithe. We must serve God according to his will which is explained in his word.

Tithing is a big step for many because 76% of Americans are living from paycheck to paycheck and are deep in debt. Those that are deep in debt feel that they cannot tithe. I understand this because I was there myself. After spending time in God’s word consistently I was convicted by the word and became a tither and God has been faithful by supplying all my needs. Every financial decision has become a spiritual decision.
