Every year in the month of January many people make their New Year’s resolutions. The word “resolution” means “promise” therefore as you move into 2023, what promise have you made? Here are a few that I have heard people say:  I plan to Lose weight, exercise more, quit smoking, self-care and you may hear some say focus on finances. What’s your financial mindset?

Many people do not look at their finances as an area to improve. The society we live in praises staying in debt. Many people spend more than they earn. They try to keep up with the Jones, but they have no idea how the Jones manage their money. All we see is the materials they own and want to emulate them.

Many people are enslaved and imprisoned by wrong beliefs about money. Indebtedness, pride, lies, divorce, corruption, death are all tied to a distorted mindset about money.

Many times, our beliefs, culture, education about money shape our thinking, therefore knowing how God see money requires a change in our financial mindset.

Total U.S. consumer debt is at $14.9 trillion which includes mortgages, auto loans, credit cards and student loans. The US Federal Government debt is at $31 trillion which averages out to 94,082 per person that lives in America. If the government and consumers are in debt, then I can assume that our churches are in debt as well. Our churches and government are made up of people that are in debt therefore they bring that debt mentality to the church and our government.

Churches teach its members Proverbs 22:7 which says that when they borrow, they become the slave to the lender, but they go against the teaching themselves and go further into debt themselves.

Albert Einstein says that “Insanity” is doing things over and over again expecting a different result.”

For many years I followed the Gospel according to Madison Avenue. I went further and further in debt. I did not hear anyone share the importance of getting out of debt. In 2010 I hit rock bottom after going through a divorce and that’s when I sought out the biblical perspective of getting out of debt. I needed a change in mindset

There are many things in this world that we think are good for us but if you are looking for something that is good for you all the time.

Scriptures

It makes you wise (Matthew 7:24)

Gives light and understanding (Psalms 119:130)

Helps you grow Spiritually (1Peter 2:2)

We live in a world that offer many choices, so in 2023 lets begin by asking God to change our mindset by taking away those worldly cravings.
