Philippians 4:11-12

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

Paul appreciated the gifts he received from the Philippian’s but he was not depended on them because he learned the secret of being content in every situation. Can we really say that? Today, many of us are very discontent because we do the following:

  1. Compare ourselves to others-we try to keep up with the Jones’s but we do not know how the Jones’s acquired their money.
  2. We conform ourselves to this world. The word conform in the Greek means suschematizo (soos-khay-mat-id-zo) to fashion alike or conform to the same pattern; to fashion yourself according to. We are bombarded with 1500-3000 advertisements daily. We have viewed over 1 million commercials before the age of 21. The message from these commercials is that you must buy contentment because you deserve a better life. Advertising companies have spent over 180 billion for you to buy their product and go into debt.

Paul was content with the little he had and that satisfied him. Paul learned contentment from his hardships and suffering therefore he depended on the providence of God to provide from day to day despite his situation. This is good news for us because we do not have to conform to this world and its advertisements if we allow God’s spirit to teach us contentment.

      No I have not had any issues with Plagorism…My material is based upon what I have experienced and learned.
